Alzheimer’s is a convoluted and bewildering journey fraught with overwhelming events and hardships which occur as the disease progresses. While each caregiver's experience is unique, there are common stages and experiences which are often encountered during this incredibly demanding and exhausting undertaking.
Support groups provide an encouraging network where experiences, both good and bad, are shared, along with helpful resources, advice, and coping strategies. These reflections, insights, and recommendations from fellow caregivers who are a bit further down the road, can be very enlightening to help sustain, buoy up, and empower someone who is struggling, and help them avoid pitfalls.
This blog was created in an attempt to provide two important elements of a support group - experience and advice. Each section is devoted to a different phase of the Alzheimer’s journey, starting with a personal story to which other caregivers will often relate and may experience themselves. I invite others to add their stories (whether good or bad) in the comments box found at the bottom of the related section to provide a more complete picture and help others avoid mistakes. Caregiver stories not only provide perspective, but can also help to identify the progression of the disease, as well as aid in anticipating and preparing for future challenges.
In addition to personal stories, most sections include Resource Links which provide helpful suggestions and useful information. Again, readers are certainly encouraged to share their advice, recommendations, and links which may benefit others in the comments box located at the bottom of the related section.
